Over near the Glen Tavern Inn in Santa Paula, a woman with a 2005 Scion XA was on her break from work and running out of patience. She'd called the closest Toyota dealer already. They told her Scion key programming was dealer-only, quoted her a wait of several days, and said she'd need to get the car towed in. She believed them because she'd read the same thing on a ScionLife forum thread.
All of that was either wrong or outdated.
I met her in the lot. Her car uses Toyota's immobilizer with a 4D-67 transponder chip read by the coil antenna around the ignition cylinder. The remote, her 08191-00922 three-button unit, is a standalone piece that just handles the door locks and panic. Two separate things to deal with, but neither one needs a dealer bay.
I generated a new 4D-67 chip with my VVDI Key Tool, registered it to the immobilizer ECU through the OBD-II port, then paired her remote. Lock, unlock, panic. Turned the key, engine caught on the first try. I tested the spare she already had too, just to confirm both were reading clean through the transponder coil.
She watched the whole thing from about four feet away, arms crossed, like she was waiting for something to go wrong. It didn't.
The immobilizer doesn't know or care whether the key was programmed at a Toyota dealer or in a parking lot. Her car sat in the same spot the whole time.
