2006 Scion XA
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: What exactly is a remote head key and how do the different parts work together?

The 2006 xA uses what's called a remote head key. There's a physical blade that you insert into the ignition cylinder to start the car and into the door lock to operate it manually. Built into the grip of that same key is the remote portion - a small transmitter that controls the door locks wirelessly. The two systems work independently.

Q: What if I need a replacement key after hours or on a weekend?

Call anyway. We run seven days a week, 6 AM to 11:30 PM, including weekends and most holidays. Evening calls are not a problem - the story above started on a Monday night. No extra charge for the hour.

Q: I bought a replacement fob online for my xA. Can I program it myself?

On the 2006 xA, the remote portion needs to be programmed to the car using a scan tool at the OBD port. There is no button sequence or ignition cycle trick that registers a new remote on this vehicle. So if you've already bought one, that's fine - bring the fob and the car together. I can program it on site in East Santa Paula without you having to go anywhere.

Q: My xA's remote suddenly stopped working but the key still starts the car. What's going on?

First thing: swap the CR2032. A weak battery will kill remote range before it kills it completely, so you might get one weak click from ten feet and nothing from twenty. Seat the new battery flat, make sure the contacts aren't bent or corroded, and test again. If a fresh battery doesn't fix it, the remote board itself may be the issue.

2006 Scion XA Remote Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

He got out of night class, walked through the campus parking structure, and the xA just sat there dark. Pressed the buttons, nothing. Tried again. Still nothing. Doors locked, spare key sitting at home in East Santa Paula, and the dealer's first available appointment was Thursday. It was Monday night.

He found me online and called. I was there in under 30 minutes.

Getting the door open wasn't the hard part. Once I was in and had a look at the fob, the problem was obvious once I cracked the shell. The remote board had a cracked solder joint - classic drop damage. The outside of the fob looked fine. Didn't matter. That joint was gone and the remote portion was just dead.

The blade was fine. The ignition side was fine. This was purely the remote board.

I built up a replacement using the correct shell and fresh electronics matching his factory fob, cut the blade to his car, programmed it at the OBD port, and walked through all three buttons in the structure to confirm range and function before I left.

He drove home that same night. The dealer quote, once he'd eventually gotten through to someone, was going to run him way more - plus whatever a tow from campus would have added on top of three days without his car. He was pretty quiet when I handed him the new key, the kind of quiet that's just relief.

Scion XA Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

How many buttons does the 2006 Scion xA remote have, and what should I know before ordering a replacement?▼

Three buttons. Lock, unlock, and the third button. When you're looking for a replacement shell or a whole new fob, match the factory fob on yours - the one that came with the car. Aftermarket fobs that don't match the original remote's internal board will need to be confirmed compatible before programming. Call us first and we can sort that out before you buy anything online.
