He got out of night class, walked through the campus parking structure, and the xA just sat there dark. Pressed the buttons, nothing. Tried again. Still nothing. Doors locked, spare key sitting at home in East Santa Paula, and the dealer's first available appointment was Thursday. It was Monday night.

Getting the door open wasn't the hard part. Once I was in and had a look at the fob, the problem was obvious once I cracked the shell. The remote board had a cracked solder joint - classic drop damage. The outside of the fob looked fine. Didn't matter. That joint was gone and the remote portion was just dead.
The blade was fine. The ignition side was fine. This was purely the remote board.
I built up a replacement using the correct shell and fresh electronics matching his factory fob, cut the blade to his car, programmed it at the OBD port, and walked through all three buttons in the structure to confirm range and function before I left.
He drove home that same night. The dealer quote, once he'd eventually gotten through to someone, was going to run him way more - plus whatever a tow from campus would have added on top of three days without his car. He was pretty quiet when I handed him the new key, the kind of quiet that's just relief.
