A guy hiked one of the fire roads outside Santa Paula and came back to the trailhead pullout with no key. Gone. Somewhere on the trail, off his carabiner, into the dirt. His 2004 Scion xA just sat there on packed gravel with no way to open it.
He hiked back uphill until he got a bar of signal and texted me a GPS pin.
I drove out with the xA setup already loaded. Lishi TOY43 for the door, a TOY43 blade blank with a 4C transponder chip ready to cut, and his remote fob, the 08191-00922 three-button unit with a fresh CR2032 already seated.
I decoded the lock cylinder at the driver door, cut the blade on my mobile machine right on the tailgate of my van, then paired the 4C chip to his immobilizer. The xA uses the Toyota engine immobilizer system, and adding a new transponder key on an all-keys-lost job means reading the immo data off the 93C56 EEPROM on the immo box. I backed that up first, then wrote the new key in. Standard procedure, but you do not skip the backup step on a dirt pullout with no second chances.
His xA started right there in the same spot it had been sitting all morning. He stood there holding the new key like he did not trust it yet.
No tow truck. No dealer visit. Just a guy back on the road from a spot no flatbed was going to reach anyway.
