2004 Scion XA
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: I found a replacement fob online. Can I program it myself for my 2004 Scion xA?

The 2004 xA does have an onboard remote programming sequence, meaning you don't always need a shop tool just to pair a new fob to the car. The process involves a timed series of steps using the door lock and the ignition, and it has to be done in a specific order without breaking the sequence. Get it right and the car accepts the new remote. Get one step out of order and you start over.

Q: How fast can you get to East Area 2 in Santa Paula?

Typical arrival in that neighborhood runs 15 to 25 minutes from when you call. No appointment window, no scheduling a day out. You call, I verify what you need, and I'm moving. For an all-keys-lost job I want to know the year and model before I leave so I'm showing up with the right blank already on the van.

Q: I lost my only key for my 2004 Scion xA. Does the whole system need to be reset?

All-keys-lost on this generation is a real job but it's manageable. Because there are no other working keys present to help initiate a standard add-a-key sequence, it takes a different approach on the programming side. I back up the relevant data first, then work through the key registration so the new key runs the car.

Q: My 2004 Scion xA fob locks and unlocks fine but one button stopped working. Do I need a whole new fob?

Not necessarily. On these older fobs the rubber button pads wear out before the electronics do. If one button takes harder presses or stopped registering entirely while the others still work, the pad itself is usually the issue, not the circuit board. Sometimes the contact point underneath just needs a clean. A full fob replacement is the backup plan, not the first move.

2004 Scion XA Remote Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

Got a text from a guy out near a mountain fire road pullout outside Santa Paula. Lost his only key somewhere on the trail. No signal most of the way down, barely enough to get a pin to me once he hit a clearing. Car was just sitting there, locked, going nowhere.

I already knew the xA before I left. Loaded the right blank and everything else I'd need for an all-keys-lost job on that year. Drove out to the pin.

He was leaning against the bumper when I pulled up. Dusty boots, empty hands. The kind of look that says the hike did not go as planned.

I decoded the lock and cut a replacement blade on the hood of my van. Then I handled the programming side so the new key would actually run the car, not just fit the ignition cylinder. After that I built out his fob, tested lock and unlock, and verified the car started clean. He watched the whole thing.

It was done in that dirt pullout, same spot the xA had been sitting all morning. He mentioned a dealer quoted him a number that also assumed a flatbed tow, since no truck was navigating that road. He saved a good chunk just by calling a mobile tech instead.

What battery does the 2004 Scion xA key fob use?▼

CR2032. It's one of the most common coin cells out there, so you can grab one at any pharmacy or hardware store if you just need a refresh. Pop the fob open carefully at the seam and note which way the battery sits before you pull it, positive side orientation matters and it's easy to flip it wrong.
