Mercedes-Benz SLK Key History
Enhanced Range Fob
The SLK received an updated fob with improved radio range, allowing lock and unlock from further distances. The new design also improved water resistance of the fob electronics.
Connected Key Platform
The latest SLK integrates the key system with Mercedes-Benz's connected vehicle platform. Phone-as-key capability, digital key sharing, and over-the-air fob updates are available on equipped models.
Unified Fob Era
Mercedes-Benz unified the SLK's remote and transponder into a single remote-head key. The transponder chip moved from the key blade into the fob body, and a flip blade provided the physical key function.
Budget Key Period
Base-model SLK from this era used cost-effective transponder chip keys without remote functions. A separate remote fob was sold as an accessory. Two pieces to carry instead of one.
Which Key Does Your SLK Have?
Another name for a flip key - the blade swings out of the fob body like a switchblade knife. Same function as a flip key: folds for portability, flips out for the ignition.
The SLK's push-to-start system uses this proximity fob. It communicates wirelessly with antenna coils inside the car. Multiple antennas around the cabin verify the fob's location before allowing start.
A 4-button smart key for the Mercedes-Benz SLK with lock, unlock, trunk, and panic/remote start functions. Push-button start and proximity entry. The most common configuration on recent model years.

Skip the Mercedes-Benz Dealer for Your SLK Key

Common Mercedes-Benz SLK Key Issues
SLK Doors Not Locking or Unlocking Remotely
Retractable hardtop refuses to cycle from the SLK key fob. The roof on R170 and R171 ties back to the central locking module, and a weak transmitter or low fob battery blocks the roof signal even when lock/unlock works. We test fob output in Solana Beach.
Push Button Start Not Responding on SLK
Transponder sync loss after a 12V swap. FBS3 loses sync with the ID46 chip. We resync on the curb with VVDI MB in around 30 minutes.
SLK Key Fob Not Pairing After Programming
Smart key rechargeable battery degradation on R172 cars. Push-button start ignores you. Fresh cell or full key replacement closes it out curbside.
Can You Program a SLK Key Yourself?
Mercedes-Benz SLK: All-keys-lost on this generation cannot be self-resolved. Even if you buy the correct blank, programming requires extracting the security PIN from the ECU with professional tools. Call (619) 876-1271.
Mercedes-Benz SLK: Due to enhanced security protocols, all key programming must go through OBD-II with PIN authentication. This applies to both key addition and all-keys-lost scenarios.
Mercedes-Benz SLK: Remote pairing only. The fob buttons can be self-paired through the door cylinder cycle procedure, but the immobilizer transponder requires OBD-II tools. Partial DIY is possible.
