Rabbit Key Architecture (Mk5 Generation)
Mk5 (A5 Chassis)
Mk5 A5 platform launch. The 2006-2007 Rabbit carries Immobilizer III with a Texas 4D (ID48) transponder chip behind a 4-button flip key. Lock, unlock, trunk, and panic buttons. On-board programming through the OBD-II port means Marco handles every step at the curb with zero dealer involvement.
Mk5 Facelift (A5 Chassis)
Same key platform, slightly worn hardware. The 2008-2009 facelift Rabbit kept the ID48 chip, the 4-button flip key, and Immobilizer III security. These facelift years are notorious for ignition switch and lock cylinder wear, which is a separate symptom from the key itself but a routine on-site diagnostic Marco runs. Programming is identical to 2006-2007.
Identify Your Rabbit Key
This is a flip key where the metal blade folds into the plastic fob body. The transponder chip inside talks to your Rabbit's immobilizer every time you turn the ignition.
Mechanically identical to the 2006-2007 flip key. Same blade, same chip, same housing. If your fob shell is cracking or the blade is worn, Marco can transfer your existing internals to a fresh shell or cut a brand-new key on-site.
Rabbit Key Pricing in San Diego

EZ Car Keyz vs. VW of San Diego
Same A5 platform Rabbit, same ID48 chip, same Immobilizer III handshake. The only difference is whether you wait three days at a dealer or thirty minutes in your driveway.
What Actually Breaks on Rabbit Keys
Ignition Switch/Lock Cylinder Failure
The 2006-2009 Rabbit ignition switch (part 1K0905851B) is a known wear point on the A5 platform. Hard key turns, steering lock refusing to release, or random no-starts even when key and battery are perfect. Marco runs OBD-II diagnostics to confirm in minutes.
Key Fob Battery/Programming Failure
You swapped the fob battery and now the buttons do nothing. Top Rabbit call Marco gets in Mira Mesa and Rancho Bernardo. Swap can desync the remote. Two-key procedure sometimes resyncs, but it needs two keys and only pairs buttons. One key? (619) 876-1271.
Immobilizer Anti-Theft Sync Loss
Cranks but will not fire and people blame battery or starter. Real cause is usually the Megamos ID48 transponder losing sync with the ECM, immobilizer light is the giveaway. Marco plugs in via OBD-II, confirms in 30 minutes, then reprograms curbside.
DIY or Pro? Rabbit Reality Check
Zero DIY for the chip side. The ID48 transponder demands professional diagnostic equipment connected to the vehicle's computer. No driver-side procedure exists for programming a new transponder.
Same story as 2006-2007. Professional diagnostic tooling is mandatory for transponder pairing. No DIY shortcut covers the chip half of the job.

Worth Knowing
The 2006-2009 Rabbit revived the classic Rabbit name in North America on the Golf Mk5 platform. It shared identical key and immobilizer systems with the Jetta and GTI of the same generation. VW brought the Rabbit badge back for just four model years before reverting to the Golf name in 2010.
