Out in the Live Oak Park Area of Fallbrook, I got a call from an independent mechanic who owned his own shop. The guy could rebuild a transmission in his sleep, but he had been fighting his personal 2008 Volkswagen Rabbit ignition for a few weeks and it was winning.
The ignition cylinder had gotten sloppy. Key would catch on the turn, sometimes need a little wiggle to get out. He had already looked up the dealer route and got a quote for a new cylinder, new key, and programming labor. Then I programmed the flip remote and ran through all four buttons to confirm the remote functions were live.
He asked me to show him the old wafers. I lined them up on the hood and you could see the wear clearly. The man fixes cars for a living and he just nodded at them like a diagnosis he had already suspected.
The dealer was going to sell him a whole new cylinder. He did not need one. Even a mechanic calls a locksmith for ignition internals, because this work is a different specialty, and he knew it.
