C-HR Key Tech
1st Gen Launch
The 2018 C-HR runs a 3-button flip key with a Texas 4D transponder chip. No push-button start on this year. The key talks to Toyota's immobilizer system, and programming demands OBD-II access through the diagnostic port under the dash.
1st Gen Mid
The 2019 C-HR may have a flip key or a smart key, depending on trim. Higher trims got push-button start with a proximity fob. Both versions still carry the Texas 4D chip and require OBD-II programming, so the process is similar either way.
1st Gen Update
The 2020 C-HR moved to a smart key with push-button start across most trims. Same Texas 4D transponder chip under the hood, but the proximity system means the key talks to the car constantly. Programming can run via OBD-II or on-board methods depending on the scenario.
1st Gen Final
The 2021 C-HR keeps the smart key and push-button start setup from 2020. Texas 4D chip, CR2032 battery, OBD-II programming. Final year for the C-HR in the US market, and the key system stayed consistent with the prior year.
Which C-HR Key Do You Have?
Folding key with the blade tucked inside the fob. Press the button and the metal key flips out. Slide it into the ignition to start the car.
Fob that lives in your pocket. Walk up, grab the handle, press the start button. A hidden emergency blade rides inside the fob for backup when the battery dies.

Us vs. the San Diego Dealer
Here is what the same C-HR key job runs after you skip the dealer service drive, the tow charge, and the loaner-car routine.
C-HR Key Problems We See in San Diego
Transponder Sync Failure
The C-HR smart key has a known issue where proximity unlock fails at the front passenger door first while driver and rear cargo doors work. The passenger antenna is prone to road-salt corrosion. We diagnose at your curb and re-pair or replace. Common from Coronado and Imperial Beach.
Smart Key Battery Drain
Usually it is just the CR2032 draining faster than expected. The proximity system on 2019-2021 cars constantly polls, eating batteries faster than a standard remote. We test fob output before recommending anything beyond a $5 battery swap.
Flip Key Blade Wear
The 2018 or 2019 flip key blade slides into the ignition hundreds of times a year. Cuts wear, key sticks or refuses to turn. A worn blade can leave you stuck in a Rancho Bernardo lot. We cut a fresh blade on-site and match it to your locks.
Prox Sensor Interference
Metal objects near the smart key block the proximity signal. Phone mounts, magnetic cases, even a heavy keychain cause intermittent push-button start failures on 2020-2021 cars. We isolate the fob and test clean first. Often the fix is reorganizing the keyring.
Can You Self-Program a C-HR Key?
No DIY self-programming procedure exists for any C-HR year. Toyota's immobilizer requires professional diagnostic tools like the Autel IM608 or Toyota Techstream to register a new key to the ECU. The older Toyota trick of inserting the key five times and cycling the door does not work on this platform.

Worth Knowing
Here is something specific to the C-HR: the 2018-2022 US C-HR was originally designed as a Scion product and only got rebadged as a Toyota when Scion shut down in 2016. The internal Toyota part numbering for early C-HR smart keys still references the discontinued Scion line in some service bulletins. We see C-HR calls weekly from North Park and University Heights, often from owners surprised the dealer warranty paperwork lists Scion engineering codes.
