I was already running a job in Kearny Mesa on a Friday evening when a second call came in from the same general area. A couple had walked out of a venue off Convoy Street to find their 2021 C-HR completely unresponsive. Both fobs. Neither one would lock, unlock, or acknowledge the car at all. They had already tried walking closer, holding the fob at different angles, the whole routine. Nothing. They were ready to leave the car and deal with it over the weekend.
They searched for a Toyota locksmith, found me, and I was still close enough to wrap the first job and roll over in about fifteen minutes.
When I got there I asked when they had last replaced the batteries. The answer was never, which is pretty common. The car was a 2021 and this was clearly the original CR2032 in at least one of the fobs. I swapped both batteries on site, clean contacts, properly seated. Fob one came right back. Fob two needed a resync after the battery swap, which happens sometimes when the fob loses its pairing signal during a full drain. A few minutes on the diagnostic port and it was back in sync with the car's security system.
Both fobs working, car starting clean on the button, verified the passive detection walking up to the door handles. Done.
They asked what the dealer would have charged and how long it would have taken. I told them honestly that a same-night dealer visit was not going to happen regardless of price, and that Monday with a tow would have been their path. They drove home Friday. That is the part that actually mattered to them.
