MR2 Key Tech
W20: Simple Mechanical Key
No transponder, no immobilizer, no chip. The W20 MR2 runs a plain mechanical key that we cut on-site in minutes. As straightforward as it gets, keeps your cost low.
W30 Spyder: Transponder Introduced
Toyota stepped things up with a Texas 4C transponder chip embedded in the key head. The key still looks simple with no buttons, but it now talks to the MR2 Spyder immobilizer. Without the right chip registered to your car, the engine refuses to fire even if the blade turns perfectly.
W30 Spyder: Remote Head Key
Toyota added a 3-button remote into the key head, giving you lock, unlock, panic buttons alongside the same Texas 4C transponder chip. Remote runs on a CR2025. Both transponder and remote need programming separately, which we handle on-site with our OBD-II tools.
Which MR2 Key Do You Have?
Plain metal key with no chip and no remote. We cut it on the spot from your existing key or from the door code.
Looks like a regular key but has a Texas 4C chip inside the plastic head. It needs to be programmed to your car's immobilizer before it will start the engine.
Key with lock, unlock, panic buttons built into the head, plus a Texas 4C transponder chip. Remote runs a CR2025; the transponder needs no battery at all.

Here is what the same MR2 key job runs after you skip the dealer service drive (most cannot work on W20/W30 anymore) and the tow.
MR2 Key Problems We See in San Diego
Transponder Failure
The MR2 Spyder W30 (2000-2005) has a known issue where the key-head transponder coil weakens over time, and the car gradually crank-but-not-starts more often. Owners think the engine is failing; it is the immobilizer. Common from Pacific Beach and Ocean Beach.
Remote Fob Battery Drain
Your 2003-2005 remote head key buttons stop working but the car starts. That is almost always the CR2025 dying or leaking inside the fob. Pop the key open, swap the battery (positive side up). If buttons still refuse, the remote board may need reprogramming.
Ignition Cylinder Wear
Usually it is the ignition cylinder, especially on cars driven hard around Sunrise Highway canyons for 20 years. We diagnose the cylinder before recommending a new key, a fresh key for a worn cylinder fixes nothing. We replace cylinders on-site when needed.
Key Programming Lockout
If a 2000-2005 Spyder driver attempted a DIY programming sequence and got the steps wrong, the ECU can lock itself out entirely. Requires a reset with professional tools. Stop and call (619) 876-1271 before you make it worse.
Can You Self-Program a Key?
The W20 MR2 has no transponder or immobilizer. Just get the key cut and it works. Zero programming involved.
With a working master key, you can add one new transponder key using a specific insert, turn, and door-open sequence. Properly cut key with the correct Texas 4C chip already inside is required. All keys lost? Self-programming is not possible and you will need professional tools.
Same on-board procedure as the 2000-2002 for the transponder side. The remote buttons need separate programming via OBD-II or EEPROM tools, which requires professional equipment. All keys lost? Call us.

Worth Knowing
Here is the obscure bit about the MR2 Spyder W30 (2000-2005): the immobilizer chip layout was identical to the same-era Celica T230 because both cars shared a parts bin under Toyota's small-sports-car group. The shock value is the MR2 Spyder used the 4-cylinder 1ZZ-FE engine from the Corolla, the same engine you can find programmed off the same key code logic in a 2003 Matrix. Three completely different cars, one shared key encryption family.
