Physically it is a plastic fob with 3 buttons on the face, a CR2032 battery inside powering the remote, and either a flip blade or an emergency key slot with a small metal insert for manual door entry. Inside the housing is a transponder chip that the car's immobilizer checks every time you press start or turn the key.
