How Tundra Key Security Has Shifted
First Generation (XK30/XK40)
Transponder key with no buttons on the key itself. The Tundra runs an ID33 chip that talks to a Type 1 Toyota immobilizer, and the remote for your locks is a separate fob you carry alongside it. Programming runs on-board, which keeps things simple and affordable.
Second Generation (XK50)
Remote head key with three buttons, a standard cut blade, and a CR2032 all built into one piece. The chip upgraded to a Toyota H chip (DST AES) (Texas 4D), and the immobilizer moved to Toyota's Type 2 system. Programming requires OBD-II access with professional tools like Techstream, so not a DIY job.
Second Generation Facelift (XK50)
Security tightened noticeably. Toyota moved to a smart proximity key with push-button start on higher trims, running the Toyota H chip (DST AES) and a laser-cut emergency blade. Programming requires both OBD-II access and server authentication, which means the right tools and the right credentials.
Third Generation
Smart key with a Toyota H chip (DST AES), laser-cut blade, and Toyota's Advanced Smart Key immobilizer. The 3rd gen Tundra requires dealer-level server authentication for key programming. We tell you that upfront before rolling out, and we can still help with lockouts and emergency blade situations.
Which Tundra Key Do You Have?
Simple metal key with a chip inside the plastic head. No buttons on the key itself; your door cylinder remote is a separate fob.
Lock, unlock, panic buttons built right into the key head. One piece to carry instead of two.
Pocket-friendly fob. Push a button on the door handle to unlock, press the dash button to start. A hidden laser-cut emergency blade rides inside for dead battery situations.
Closely related fob design to the 2014-2021 cars, but with upgraded encryption. The emergency blade inside is laser cut and works the same way.
San Diego Tundra Pricing
Every price covers the blank, cutting, programming, and bench test. Zero hidden fees.
Us vs. the San Diego Dealer
Here is what the same Tundra key job costs after you skip the dealer service bay, the flatbed tow, and the parts-counter markup.
Tundra Key Problems We See in San Diego
Transponder Synchronization Failure
The 2nd-gen XK50 Tundra (2007-2021) is a frequent call when smart key remote-start range collapses after about four years. The transmitter weakens slowly; battery swaps do not help. We replace with OEM Toyota smart key shell + transmitter and re-pair to the ECU, around $265. Regular call from Rancho Santa Fe.
Smart Key Fob Battery Drain
The CR2032 in your 2014-2025 smart key should last about two years. But leaving the fob inside the truck means the proximity system pings it, killing the battery in weeks. We check fob battery first because a $5 swap fixes this about half the time.
Laser Cut Blade Breakage
The thick high-security steel on 2014-2025 Tundra blades is strong but rigid, and forcing it in a sticky emergency lock cylinder snaps it at the base. We carry precision-cut replacement blades on every call and pair a new one to your fob on the spot.
ECU Immobilizer Lockout
On 2007-2021 Tundras, the ECU can lock itself out after too many failed start attempts. Security feature, not a key failure. We connect through OBD-II, verify the lockout, reset the immobilizer with a PIN code, and get you running without a tow to the dealer.
Can You Self-Program a Tundra Key?
You can program the separate remote fob yourself via a timed ignition cycling method, with a working key. But the transponder chip in the key itself still needs professional programming to start the engine.
The Toyota H chip (DST AES) (Texas 4D) chip in your remote head key requires OBD-II programming with professional tools. No DIY shortcut for this generation.
Your smart key uses a Toyota 4D-67 (Texas Crypto) chip that needs both OBD-II access and server authentication. This is a professional-only job, and we handle it mobile.
The 3rd gen Tundra Advanced Smart Key system requires Toyota dealer server access for key programming. We cannot do this one on-site, and we tell you that upfront before rolling out.

Worth Knowing
Here is the trick most Tundra owners do not know: the 2nd-gen XK50 Tundra (2007-2021) runs the same Toyota H chip with DST AES encryption as the Land Cruiser and Sequoia. That means a key cut for one of those three trucks can be programmed for the other two on the same scan tool session. Saves us a step on the rare two-Toyota household calls we get out of Poway and Rancho Bernardo.
