Out in Downtown Escondido, I got a text from a guy who had parked his 2005 Tundra on a campsite access road somewhere past the edge of cell service. He managed to get a message out before the signal dropped completely. He had lost his only key somewhere between the tent and the fire pit, and the truck wasn't going anywhere.
He dropped me a GPS pin before the signal went out. I loaded the van and drove to it.
When I got there, he was sitting on a cooler next to the truck looking like he had been thinking about that lost key for a while. The Tundra is a transponder system on this generation, so I had two jobs: decode the lock and cut a replacement blade, then get the new transponder chip enrolled so the truck would actually run. All-keys-lost on these requires the right equipment to read the immobilizer data and register the new key from scratch, since there are no existing working keys to use an onboard relearn sequence with.
I decoded the lock mechanically at the door cylinder, cut the blade on my bench in the van, and worked through the programming at the OBD port. The truck turned over and ran on the first try.
He just stood there and stared at the dash for a second. Then he said something like "I didn't think that was going to happen out here."
The dealer would have meant a tow first, since no flatbed was reaching that access road without a serious effort, then a service queue, then a wait for parts. He was back to driving the same afternoon. No tow, no queue, no waiting room.
