I got a call from a tire shop in Downtown National City. A customer had brought his 2023 Tundra in for tires, and somewhere in the process the truck's battery had been disconnected and then reconnected incorrectly. The truck would not start. A locksmith got there before me, tried to address the key registration through the OBD port, hit errors, and left. The tire shop manager called me and said the words I hear more than I would like: "The last guy made it worse."
When I got there, the truck was just sitting in the bay. The owner was leaning against the fender looking at his phone, waiting. The tire shop guys had stopped asking him questions.
The issue was a fault state in the vehicle security system left over from the previous failed attempt. The OBD path was not going to give me clean communication at that point. I pulled the relevant module and used bench-level tooling to read the security data directly, clear the fault state, and rebuild the key registration from scratch. It is the kind of job where you do not rush the process. The system had a timed sequence built into re-registration, and you sit with it.
First clean attempt after the reset, the fob enrolled. I walked every function: door handles, all four buttons, interior detection so the truck would see the fob in the cab and allow start. Everything responded.
The owner looked at the truck, then at me, and said something like "so it actually works." Not a question, more like he was checking the air to see if it was real.
He had been looking at a flatbed to the dealer, a multi-day wait while they sourced and programmed a key through their pipeline, and a bill that would have been a lot heavier than mine. Instead he drove out of that tire shop on his new tires.
Total time on site was about 90 minutes, most of it the reset sequence itself.
