How Toyota Built the FJ Cruiser Key System
1st Generation (Early)
Toyota kept things straightforward with a 3-button remote head key on the GSJ10/15 platform. Standard blade, CR2032 battery, transponder chip that talks to the Toyota Immobilizer. On-board programming handles the remote functions, so adding a spare is relatively quick.
1st Generation (Mid)
Not much changed. Still a 3-button remote head key with the same standard blade and CR2032. The Toyota Immobilizer carries over, on-board programming still handles remote pairing. Mechanically and electronically, these are very close to the 2007-2008 setup.
1st Generation (Late)
Toyota added a fourth button to the remote head key. Standard blade and CR2032 stayed, but the extra button gave you more control. Toyota Immobilizer continued, OEM remotes are strongly recommended for these years because aftermarket units tend to fail early.
1st Generation (Final)
The last FJ Cruisers rolled off the line with the same 4-button remote head key and standard blade. Push-button start never made it to the FJ, so you are still working with a traditional keyed ignition. Toyota Immobilizer handles security, these final years are fully supported with our on-site tools.
Which FJ Cruiser Key Do You Have?
Chunky black fob with a metal blade built in. Three buttons: lock, unlock, panic. This is the key that starts your engine and runs your locks.
Same style as the earlier key with a fourth button added. Standard blade, same CR2032 battery. A slightly bigger version of the 2007 fob.

Us vs. the San Diego Dealer
Here is what the same FJ Cruiser key job runs after you skip the dealer service drive, the flatbed tow from the trail, and the loaner-truck upsell.
FJ Cruiser Key Problems We See in San Diego
Aftermarket Remote Failure
Cheap aftermarket FJ Cruiser fobs are the number-one call. $20 Amazon remotes work a few months, then buttons go mushy and signal collapses. The transponder chip often runs a different encoding than genuine Toyota. We carry OEM Toyota FJ remotes on every van. Constant call from Alpine and Lakeside.
VIP Security System Sensitivity
Your 2007 FJ alarm keeps tripping, at night or in parking garages. The VIP (RS3200+) security system on Convenience Package cars had a glass-breakage mic never properly calibrated. A Security Off switch disables it; we adjust at your San Diego address.
Programming Mode Exit Issues
If you did not open the driver door at the very end of the sequence, the FJ never exits programming mode and nothing saves. Miss the 40-second window on any step and it resets. We see this constantly with 2007-2008 drivers in Carmel Valley who tried it themselves first.
Can You Self-Program It?
You can program the remote lock/unlock functions yourself via a door and ignition sequence. But the transponder chip that actually starts the engine needs professional programming. You can pair a new fob to the locks at home, but you still need us to make the key start the truck.
Same deal as the earlier years. Remote functions can be self-programmed with the right sequence, but the immobilizer chip requires professional tools. Adding a spare with an existing working key? The remote pairing is doable at home. For the transponder, call us.

Worth Knowing
Here is something specific to the FJ Cruiser: the 2007-2010 trucks shipped with the FJ-exclusive VIP RS3200+ security system, an alarm so sensitive Toyota had to add a dedicated Security Off switch to the dashboard. The glass-breakage microphone would fire from a heavy hand on the door, loud bass from the stereo, or even Santa Ana wind gusts in Julian. FJ Cruiser forums are still full of stories about the alarm going off at 3 AM in empty Ramona driveways. Most owners disable it permanently once they figure out the switch.
