Yes, broken key extraction is a standard call for me. The 2008 FJ Cruiser uses a turn-key ignition, so the blade sees real daily wear, and the key head on these is mostly plastic around a small transponder. The shell can crack and the blade can snap, especially if the steering wheel is binding against the lock when someone forces it.

Nine times out of ten on these, it is the key registration, not the module. Crank-and-stall in a couple of seconds is the classic sign that the immobilizer is not seeing a valid chip match. It lets the engine fire, then kills it.

Before assuming the module is bad, check a few things. Try your other key if you have one. If the spare starts and holds idle, the problem is isolated to the key you were using, not the car. If neither key works and nothing changed recently, that points toward a failed registration or a damaged antenna ring around the ignition.

A bad immobilizer module on these is genuinely rare. Misdiagnosis is more common than actual module failure. If someone told you the module is bad without running a full diagnostic, get a second opinion.

Can I program a spare transponder key for my 2008 FJ Cruiser myself at home?
