2012 Toyota Fj Cruiser Transponder Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional
A guy was stuck on the shoulder of the 15 near Santaluz, just inside Rancho Bernardo, with half a key in his hand and the other half lodged in his FJ Cruiser's ignition cylinder.
He'd been fighting a stiff ignition for a few weeks. That morning it finally gave out on him mid-turn. The blade snapped clean, and the broken piece seated itself deep enough that he couldn't grab it with his fingers. He called another locksmith first. That guy quoted him a full ignition replacement over the phone without even seeing the car.
I carry extraction tools that fit Toyota's keyway. I worked the broken fragment out without disturbing the wafers inside the cylinder. Once it was clear, I decoded the lock from the wafer positions, cut a fresh replacement blade to match, and programmed the transponder chip through the OBD port so the immobilizer would accept the new key.
The cylinder was fine. The lock worked the same as the day the truck was built. No drilling, no replacement parts, no visible evidence I had ever been there.
The other locksmith's plan would have meant a new ignition cylinder, a new key cut to that cylinder, reprogramming, and labor stacked on top of labor. The owner saved a good chunk by going the non-destructive route first. That should always be the first approach, not the fallback.
