Mirai Key Tech
1st Generation (JPD10)
The 1st gen Mirai runs a 4-button smart proximity key with FCC ID HYQ14FBA and a CR2032 battery. Toyota Proximity Immobilizer Type 3/5 system, push-button start and keyless entry through proximity sensors. Programming runs through the OBD-II port, no dealer PIN required for add-a-key or all-keys-lost jobs.
1st Generation (JPD10) Continued
The 2018 or 2019 Mirai carries the same HYQ14FBA smart key and Prox Type 3/5 immobilizer as the earlier years. Toyota kept the system identical. Same 4-button layout, same CR2032, same OBD-II programming. If you have had a Mirai key before, this one works exactly the same way.
1st Generation (JPD10) Final Year
The 2020 Mirai rounds out the 1st gen with no changes to the key system. Still the HYQ14FBA 4-button smart key with Prox Type 3/5 immobilizer. Still OBD-II programmable on-site. Toyota kept things consistent across the entire JPD10 platform, which keeps our job straightforward and your cost down.
2nd Generation (JPD20)
The redesigned 2nd gen Mirai runs a 4-button smart proximity key with FCC ID HYQ14FLA and a tighter immobilizer than the first generation. Still pocket-and-push-button, but the security handshake is stricter. Marco programs these curbside with the right diagnostic tools.
Which Mirai Key Do You Have?
Black proximity fob with silver trim and the Toyota logo. Never insert it; pocket-friendly, press the start button. A hidden emergency blade rides inside for manual door entry.
Identical fob to the 2016-2017 cars. Same shape, same buttons, same internal electronics. Mirai key from any year in this range looks exactly the same.
Same smart key as every other first-gen Mirai. Four buttons, proximity entry, push-button start. The emergency blade tucked inside the fob fits the driver's door if your battery ever dies.
The 2nd gen fob for the redesigned JPD20 Mirai. Same pocket-and-push-button feel, but it carries HYQ14FLA electronics and a tighter immobilizer than the 1st gen. The emergency blade inside opens the door if the battery dies.
San Diego Mirai Pricing
Price covers the blank, blade cutting, OBD-II programming, and bench test. All-keys-lost jobs sit at the higher end of the range.
EZ Car Keyz vs. the San Diego Dealer
Here is what the same Mirai key job runs after you skip the dealer service drive (only a handful of Toyota dealers in California service Mirais) and the tow.
Mirai Key Problems We See in San Diego
Smart Key Battery Failure
The Mirai smart key has an unusual issue where proximity unlock intermittently fails when parked next to a hydrogen fueling pump of EM interference. Re-positioning the car clears it. We diagnose at your curb. Common from Mirai owners at the Del Mar True Zero station.
Transponder Programming Errors
If someone used the wrong procedure or a tool not NASTF-registered for Toyota's Prox Type 3/5 system, the immobilizer rejects the key entirely. We use Autel IM608 and Toyota Techstream with proper NASTF credentials, so the programming sticks the first time.
Blade Wear on Emergency Insert
Your Mirai emergency blade gets sticky or refuses to turn in the driver door cylinder. That little metal key inside the fob takes a beating over time. We cut a fresh replacement blade on-site so you always have a working backup when the fob battery dies.
Can You Self-Program a Mirai Key?
No DIY self-programming procedure exists for the Mirai. Toyota's Prox Type 3/5 immobilizer requires OBD-II diagnostic tools like Techstream or an Autel IM608 to register new smart keys. Locksmith or dealer.

Worth Knowing
Here is something specific to the Mirai: California sold roughly 90% of all US Mirais, and a meaningful share of those went to San Diego county drivers who live near True Zero hydrogen stations in Del Mar and Mira Mesa. The 2016-2020 Mirai used the same Toyota H chip smart key as the same-era Camry, but Toyota uses a Mirai-specific FCC code (HYQ14FBC) because the antenna pattern is tuned differently for the fuel cell electrical noise environment.
