A guy in Coronado Village picked up a used 2020 Mirai privately. Hydrogen car, low miles, one key. The seller handed him a single fob and told him to sort out a spare himself, like it was no big deal.
He called a hardware store first. They passed. Then he called the dealer, who quoted him a number that made him pause and start googling. That's when he found me.
When I got to him, the fob he had was worn down, the rubber on the buttons soft from years of pocket carry. The Mirai's smart key system doesn't have a backup ignition cylinder the way most Toyota keys do, so that single fob was the only way in and the only way to start the car. One dead battery or one lost fob and he'd be standing on a sidewalk in Coronado with a hydrogen sedan going nowhere.
I added a second fob on site through the diagnostic port, registered it to the vehicle's security system, and verified both fobs fully: door handles, start button recognition, all buttons. The whole thing wrapped up at the car, no tow, no dealer appointment, no waiting three days for a part to come in.
He asked me afterward what would've happened if he'd lost that original before calling me. I told him all-keys-lost on a Mirai is a longer job, more involved, more expensive. Having that second key in his pocket changes that scenario completely.
