2019 Toyota Mirai
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

Q: How does mobile smart key replacement work for this vehicle?

You call, give me the year, make, model, and VIN. I confirm the correct fob and blade for your Mirai and give you a price on the phone before anyone drives anywhere. When I arrive, I verify ownership with your ID and registration, pull the VIN to lock in the key specs, cut the emergency insert blade, and register the new fob to your vehicle through the OBD port using professional programming equipment.

Q: What do I need to have ready when you arrive?

Your vehicle, a valid photo ID, and proof of ownership - registration works fine. That is the full list. I pull the VIN from the door jamb or dash to verify the key specs on my end. It stays simple.

Q: I only have one key for my 2019 Mirai. If I lose it, can a new key still be made, or is the car dead?

All-keys-lost on the Mirai is a real job, not a dead end, but it is more involved than adding a spare when you still have a working key. With no working fob present, the immobilizer has to be handled differently - the diagnostic process takes longer and requires professional equipment that can communicate with the vehicle's security system even without a recognized key to wake it up. It can still be done on site in most cases.

Q: The Mirai is a pretty rare car. Are replacement fobs actually available, or do I have to wait weeks for parts?

Availability is not the obstacle most people expect. The fob used on the 2019 Mirai shares its platform with other Toyota smart key fobs from the same generation, so the hardware is not exotic even if the car is. I keep fobs stocked for this job. The programming side is what requires professional equipment - but that is true of any Toyota smart key, not something unique to the Mirai.

2019 Toyota Mirai Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

A renter in Downtown Fallbrook called me on a Tuesday afternoon. He had one working smart key for his 2019 Mirai and wanted a spare cut before life made that decision for him. He had already called the dealer and gotten a quote that made him stop and stare at his phone for a second.

He had the car parked in his apartment lot. I pulled up, verified the VIN off the door jamb, confirmed ownership, and got to work. The Mirai uses a four-button smart fob, and the job involves cutting the emergency insert blade and then registering the new fob to the vehicle through the OBD port with professional diagnostic equipment. There is no shortcut sequence on this one, no ignition trick. The immobilizer system on the Mirai is not the kind you can talk around with a YouTube tutorial.

The whole thing took about 35 to 40 minutes at his parking spot. I walked every function before I handed it over: door handles, lock and unlock, the start button with both fobs present, and the emergency blade in the door cylinder. Everything confirmed.

He saved a good chunk compared to the dealer number. And he did not have to figure out how to get a hydrogen fuel cell vehicle to a service bay on the other side of the county, which, for a Mirai owner, is not a trivial problem when your nearest Toyota dealer with Mirai service experience might be a long drive away.

Toyota Mirai Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

Do I need to bring my 2019 Toyota Mirai somewhere for key replacement?▼

No. I come to you. That matters more for the Mirai than for most vehicles because Toyota's hydrogen fuel cell service network is thinner than the regular dealer network. If your nearest Mirai-capable dealer is 30 or 40 miles away, getting there without a working key means a tow, which adds time and money before the key job even starts.
