3rd Gen (N120/N130)
Standard metal key with a Texas 4C (ID33) transponder chip in the plastic head. Toyota introduced the immobilizer partway through this generation around 1998, so earlier cars are purely mechanical. With the chip, it talks directly to the immobilizer on every ignition turn, and programming runs on-board without a scan tool.
4th Gen (N210)
Remote head key with a Toyota 4D-67 (DST40), high-security blade, three buttons built into the head. CR1632 battery, FCC ID HYQ12BBX. Programming demands OBD-II access through the diagnostic port under the dash, requiring professional tools like Techstream or the Autel IM608. No more on-board procedures on this generation.
5th Gen (N280)
Flip key or smart key with a Toyota H chip (DST AES), laser-cut blade, four buttons. Starting 2014, Limited and TRD Pro trims got push-button start with a full proximity smart key. Programming demands Toyota server authentication, which means the locksmith needs a TIS subscription and the right tools to reach Toyota servers in real time. Most secure 4Runner generation by far.
Which 4Runner Key Do You Have?
Plain metal key with a transponder chip embedded in the head. No buttons, no battery. Turn it in the ignition and the chip does the work.
Lock, unlock, and panic buttons built into the key head. Blade is a high-security cut, harder to copy at a hardware store.
Depending on trim, either a flip key with a blade folding into the fob, or a smart proximity key for push-button start. Both run a laser-cut blade and a CR2032.

Transponder Chip Failure
The 5th-gen 4Runner (2010-2024) HYQ12BBX smart key cracks along the button seam after about four years of pocket wear. Chip and transmitter still work. We swap the OEM Toyota shell and re-pair the chip, $155 curbside. Common from Poway and Rancho Bernardo.
Smart Key Proxy Alignment Loss
Mismatch between smart key proximity ID and the vehicle receivers. After a programming event or dead battery, 2014-2024 4Runner doors and ignition stop recognizing the fob. We realign proxy IDs via Techstream.
Immobilizer ECU Sync Issues
Battery die or get disconnected? On 2003-2024 4Runners, that knocks the immobilizer ECU out of sync. Fix is a full relearn through the OBD-II port. We carry the tools on every truck, usually a quick visit.
Fob Button Wear
On 2003-2009 4Runners, the rubber button pad wears through from heavy use, especially trail duty near Julian or Cleveland National Forest. The remote board is usually fine. We swap internals into a new shell, no reprogramming.
Can You Self-Program a 4Runner Key?
No DIY transponder programming exists for this generation. Professional tools or a dealer required to register a new key to the immobilizer.
With the original master key (black head, not the grey valet key), you can add one new transponder key via a timed insert-and-remove procedure through the ignition. The new key must carry the correct 4D-67 chip. Without a master key, or to program the remote buttons, you need a locksmith.
No DIY for this generation. Smart key and flip key systems demand diagnostic tools with Toyota server authentication. Professional-only.
