The chip responds with its registered code. The immobilizer reads that code, confirms it matches what is stored, and only then allows the engine to run.

If the code does not match, or if no chip is detected at all, the engine will crank and then die within one or two seconds. That is the system working exactly as designed.

On the 2005 4Runner, programming a new chip to the immobilizer requires diagnostic equipment connected through the OBD port. There is no ignition-turn sequence or button trick that enrolls a new key on this system. The chip has to be written by a tool that can communicate with the immobilizer directly.

If you have a spare key, try that one. If the spare starts the truck and holds, the chip in the primary key is the issue, not the vehicle.
