2009 Toyota 4runner
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

Q: Do I need to tow my 4Runner to the dealer if I have no working keys?

Not for a 2009. Dealers default to telling you to tow because that's how their service lane works. A mobile locksmith with the right equipment can do the all-keys-lost job wherever the truck is parked. The 2009 4Runner's security system is accessible through standard OBD tools, so there's no dealer-only software wall on this generation. If your truck is sitting at your in-laws' place in Otay Mesa West, that's exactly where we come.

Q: How long does an all-keys-lost job take on a 2009 4Runner?

On site, plan for roughly 45 minutes to an hour. The immobilizer reset on this generation has a built-in timed cycle when no master key is present, and that cycle alone runs close to 15 to 20 minutes. After that, cutting the blade and programming the transponder adds another 15 to 20 minutes. At a dealer, the same work can stretch to a full day because of intake, scheduling, and parts availability. The mobile route skips all of that.

Q: My 2009 4Runner starts fine but the security light stays on solid after I start it. Is something wrong with the key?

The security light behavior on this generation is worth paying attention to. Normal operation: the light flashes when the ignition is off, then goes out a few seconds after you start the truck. If it stays on solid while the engine is running, that points to the immobilizer not seeing a valid signal from the transponder chip in your key.

Q: I bought a cut key blank online for my 2009 4Runner. Can I just use it, or does it still need programming?

It still needs programming. The blade might turn the ignition, but the engine won't run without the transponder chip inside the key being registered to the immobilizer. The 2009 4Runner will crank and then immediately stall if the chip isn't recognized. That's the immobilizer doing its job. Bring the blank to us and we can program it on site, assuming the chip type in that blank is correct for this generation.

2009 Toyota 4runner Transponder Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I was out in Otay Mesa West on a Saturday when a guy flagged me down from a driveway. He was visiting his in-laws for the weekend and had one key left for his 2009 4Runner. Not lost yet, but close enough that it was bothering him.

He asked me point blank whether an aftermarket key blank would actually work the same as a dealer key. He'd heard things. Dealer told him OEM only, of course.

Honest answer is that the quality of the blank matters more than the brand name on the housing. I carry blanks I've tested across a lot of Toyota jobs. The blade profile is correct for this truck, the chip is the right type for this generation's immobilizer, and the housing is solid plastic, not the thin stuff that cracks in three months. What you don't get is the Toyota logo on the back. That's the whole difference.

I cut the key on my machine in the driveway, ran the programming sequence through the OBD port, and tested it in the ignition and at the door. Started clean, turned smooth.

He asked what the dealer would have charged. I told him to call and find out for comparison. He already knew it was going to be more. The part he didn't expect was that he would have had to drive there, wait, and probably come back the next day if they didn't have the blank in stock. We were done before his in-laws finished lunch.

Toyota 4runner Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

I lost all my keys to my 2009 4Runner. Can you still make a new one?▼

Yes, all-keys-lost on the 2009 4Runner is a job we handle on site. When there's no working key present, we cut a new blade to the vehicle using either the key code or by reading the lock, then reset the immobilizer and program the new transponder chip through the OBD port. The immobilizer reset on this generation includes a timed cycle, so the job takes a bit longer than a standard spare, but it's done at your location.
