Push-to-start all-keys-lost is the job that worries Toyota owners the most. No key slot. No way to physically turn an ignition. The car needs to wirelessly detect a registered fob before it will even power on. When that fob is gone, the car feels completely dead. It is not.
A camper at a national forest campground outside Otay Mesa had a 2009 Toyota 4runner with push-to-start and zero keys. He was 45 minutes from town with no cell service at the tent site. He walked to the camp host to use a phone.
I drove out to the campground. Push-to-start AKL on Toyota is more involved than a standard blade key job. The smart box or ID box sometimes needs to be accessed directly and the old key data cleared before new fobs can register. I used my ACDP to read the immobilizer data from the smart box as a backup, then ran the AKL sequence through OBD. His fob, FCC ID , was a 3-button proximity key. Reading the car's security module means connecting to the chip that stores encryption data and telling it to trust new fobs.
His car started at a campground with no cell service and no tow access. Total was $119. The dealer route would have been $287 plus a long-distance tow. Smart key AKL is tool-dependent, not dealer-dependent. Right tools and current software make it a field job.
