2020 Toyota 4runner Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

Near Lake Poway, a woman called me about her 2020 4Runner. She had bought it used a couple of years back, drove off the lot with one key, always planned to get a spare cut, and never did. Then the fob housing cracked along the seam, and when she tried the door lock cylinder as a backup, the blade snapped. Half of it went into the lock. She was standing in a parking lot near the lake holding a broken fob shell and nothing else.

When I got there, the blade fragment was still seated in the cylinder. I extracted it, then decoded the lock to get the correct cut. The chip inside the cracked housing was still intact, which is more common than people expect. A cracked shell does not mean a dead chip. I was able to read the transponder data from it directly, which told me I could avoid a full all-keys-lost reset and work from what was already there.

I rebuilt the circuit board and chip into a new shell, cut two fresh key blades to match the lock decode, and programmed a second fob as a proper spare. Tested every function: handles, push-button start, lock, unlock, all of it.

She went from zero working keys to two in about 40 minutes. If she had gone to the dealer, they would have quoted her for a complete all-keys-lost job regardless of whether the chip was recoverable, and the wait for an appointment alone would have cost her a day. Saving the original chip saved time and money. The spare she never got around to ordering now lives on her kitchen counter where she can actually find it.
