I got a call from a guy over near Garden Road in Poway who was parked outside the library trying to figure out his next move. He had already paid a different locksmith to program a replacement key for his 2008 4Runner. The key cranked the engine. Then the engine died two seconds later. Every time, same thing.
The first locksmith told him the immobilizer module itself was bad and walked away. That is a convenient answer when you do not want to admit the job did not get finished.
When I arrived, I pulled up what was actually stored in the immobilizer. The module was fine. What had happened was the key registration never completed the full security handshake Toyota requires. The process involves a seed-and-response calculation and a timed sequence. If you disconnect too early or the tool does not hold through the full cycle, the key gets a temporary write. The module does not reject it immediately, which is why the engine fires. But it does not commit that key to permanent memory either, which is why the engine shuts back down.
I cleared the failed registration, ran a clean reset through the OBD port with the full sequence, and watched the confirmation on my screen showing the key permanently stored. Then I started the truck three times back to back, each time clean, no stall, no warning on the dash.
He had already paid once for a job that was not finished. What I could give him was a screen showing the key actually registered, and a truck that started. That is the difference between attempted and done.
