2023 Toyota 4runner
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

2023 Toyota 4runner Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I got a call from a woman in the Sweetwater neighborhood of National City.

Her 2023 4Runner fob was cracked along the seam, the rubber button pad had worn through on the lock button, and the shell had split bad enough that she was holding it together with a rubber band. Functionally the fob still worked, mostly, but the buttons were inconsistent and she was worried it was a matter of time before something got into the circuit board.

She had already called the dealer. The number they gave her for a full replacement key was enough to make her put the phone down and start searching for another option.

When I pulled up, she was parked in her cul-de-sac. I looked at the fob before I even opened my bag. The electronics inside were clean, no corrosion, no damaged board, no failed transponder. The shell was the problem, nothing else. I transferred the guts into a replacement housing, seated everything properly, verified the button contacts lined up, and tested every function: lock, unlock, the rear function, and the panic. Then I confirmed the push-button start read the fob correctly from the driver seat.

Cut a fresh emergency blade to match her door, verified it turned, and that was the job.

She saved a good chunk over what the dealer quoted, and she didn't have to leave the vehicle anywhere or wait on parts to be ordered. That's the version of this job I run into more often than people expect. The expensive component, the programmed transponder, was fine. She just needed someone to look at it honestly before assuming it all had to be replaced.
