My key broke in the ignition. Can you get it out?

Yes. Broken key extraction is a standard mobile job. I use specialized tools to pull the broken piece out without touching the ignition cylinder walls. Once it's out, I can cut a replacement from the extracted piece or pull your vehicle's key code through other means and cut from that.

One thing worth knowing on this generation 4Runner: the key fob shell is a two-piece plastic housing held together by a single retention peg. Forum threads going back years show owners breaking that peg repeatedly, sometimes on the same key. If the shell is cracking or the blade is wobbling in the housing, that's the peg. A replacement shell is cheap, and transplanting the blade and electronics over takes a few minutes. Better to catch it before it snaps off inside the ignition.

What exactly is a "remote" key and how does it work on a 1999 4Runner?

On this truck, the remote is a single unit: a metal blade on one end for the ignition and door locks, a transponder chip inside the housing, and a 4-button remote transmitter built into the same body. The chip communicates with the immobilizer when you turn the key. The buttons handle lock, unlock, and the other remote functions wirelessly.

That means one key is doing three jobs. If the blade wears down, it affects the ignition. If the transponder signal weakens or the key isn't programmed, the engine won't run even if the blade turns fine. If the battery dies, the buttons stop working but the blade and chip still function normally. Knowing which layer failed tells you what the actual fix is, and that's usually the first thing I sort out on a call.

My 4Runner is showing a key-not-detected warning. What should I check first?

Start with the CR2032. A dead or weak battery kills the remote functions and can cause the system to behave strangely. Swap it out and retest.

If a fresh battery doesn't change anything, the next question is whether the engine still starts. On this generation, the transponder chip works independently of the battery, so if the car won't start at all, you may be looking at a chip issue or an immobilizer concern rather than just a dead fob. If it starts fine but the buttons don't respond, that points back to the remote transmitter or battery contacts.

If neither fix gets you there, that's the point where you call me and I bring a reader on site to diagnose whether it's the fob, the receiver antenna, or something deeper in the security system.

I bought a replacement fob online. Can I program it myself, or do I need a tech?

This one's actually friendlier than a lot of people expect. The 1999 4Runner has an onboard add-a-key sequence that works through the door lock and ignition cylinder, no laptop needed, as long as you have at least one currently working programmed key in hand. Plenty of forum walkthroughs exist for it.

All-keys-lost is a different situation. If there's no working key to start from, that sequence won't get you anywhere and you need proper programming equipment on site.

One more thing: even if the remote buttons program correctly, the transponder chip in the new fob still needs to be registered to the immobilizer separately. Those are two different steps. Miss the second one and the buttons will work but the engine won't start. Make sure whatever fob you bought has a compatible transponder, not just the right button count.

My 4Runner starts fine but the remote range is terrible. It barely works from ten feet away. What's going on?

Usually the CR2032. Even a battery that tests at partial voltage can cut range dramatically on these older remotes. Swap it before anything else.

If a fresh battery doesn't bring the range back, open the housing and check the contacts. Corrosion on a 25-plus-year-old fob is common, especially in a climate like Escondido where a truck might sit in a hot garage for years between owners. A light clean on the contacts can make a real difference.

If range stays short after both of those, the transmitter board inside the fob may be degraded. At that point, a replacement remote is the move.
