Out in the Richland area of San Marcos, a guy flagged me down through YouTube. He had watched one of my Toyota key videos months before he needed anything, saw the actual process filmed at a real car, and saved my number for later. That call finally came when he was locked out of his 2003 4Runner with no working key on him.

When I got there he was standing next to the truck in a parking lot off one of the residential streets near Richland, zero shade, midday. The original key was worn down enough that it was turning the cylinder but the truck was stalling immediately after crank. Classic sign that the chip inside had failed or the transponder signal had dropped below what the immobilizer would accept. The blade still worked mechanically, but the security side had given up.

I cut a new key blade to the vehicle and programmed the transponder to the truck on site. The immobilizer reset cycle on these takes a few minutes to complete, so we talked through what I was doing while it ran. Once it finished, the truck started clean and held. I ran it three more times to confirm, which is not for show. That third start is the one that tells you it is not a fluke.

He mentioned the dealer had quoted him a wait of several days for parts and a scheduled appointment. He drove home from that parking lot the same afternoon.
