I got a call from a guy out in Fernbrook. He had a 2007 4Runner sitting in his driveway with a key that had been acting up for weeks.
Some mornings it started fine. Other mornings he'd turn the key and the engine would fire for a second and then cut out. Security light on the dash. He'd wait a few minutes, try again, and it would usually catch. He figured it would sort itself out.
It didn't sort itself out.
By the time he called me, it had stopped starting entirely. He'd already been quoted a price from the dealer to diagnose it before they'd even touch the key programming side of things. That kind of answer didn't sit well with him, so he went looking for another option and found me.
I came out to Fernbrook and started where I always start with these: the antenna ring around the ignition cylinder. Sure enough, there was movement in it. The connector behind the trim panel had partially unseated. The key itself was fine. The transponder inside it was reading correctly once I had a stable connection to test against.
I reseated the connector, confirmed clean communication between the key and the immobilizer, and cycled the ignition several times to verify the start was consistent. Fired up every time.
He had been ready to buy new keys and pay for a full reprogram. Didn't need any of that. The key he already had worked perfectly once the antenna ring was doing its job. I charged him for the diagnostic and the fix, and he saved a serious chunk compared to where the dealer visit was headed.
Sometimes the best outcome is finding out you didn't need what you thought you needed.
