2002 Toyota 4runner
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

Q: What exactly is a "remote" key and what does mine do?

On your 2002 4Runner, the remote is a combination unit. One side is a physical key blade that turns the ignition. Embedded in the head is a transponder chip that talks to the immobilizer when you crank the engine. The fob side has four buttons that send a radio signal to a receiver in the truck for locking, unlocking, and the panic alarm. Two systems, one key.

Q: My 4Runner is showing a key warning on the dash. Where do I start?

Start with the CR2032 in the fob. A weak battery is the most common reason for reduced range or a key-not-detected warning on Toyotas from this generation. Pop the fob open with a small flathead wrapped in a cloth to avoid scratching the shell, swap the battery, and retest from about 20 feet. If a fresh battery does not fix it, try the blade in the door lock manually.

Q: I bought a replacement fob online. Can I program it myself to my 2002 4Runner?

There is actually an onboard add-a-key procedure for the remote side on this generation 4Runner that some owners pull off at home. It involves a timed sequence using the driver door lock and the ignition, and it registers new remotes to the truck without a programmer. The catch: it erases all previously registered fobs at the start of the sequence, so every remote you want to keep, including your current working one, has to be re-registered in the same session.

Q: How long does a 2002 4Runner key replacement actually take when done on site?

For a standard spare with an existing working key: about 20 to 30 minutes on site. Cutting the blade, confirming the transponder chip, programming, and testing all four remote buttons plus ignition start. All-keys-lost takes longer because there is no working key to reference and the programming process requires more steps to establish the first registered key from scratch. Budget closer to 45 to 60 minutes for that scenario. Either way, I come to you.

2002 Toyota 4runner Remote Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

A guy visiting family in San Ysidro, right off the Las Americas Area near the border crossing, flagged me down after finding my listing on his phone. He had a 2002 4Runner and wanted a spare key made before the drive back up north.

Not an emergency, just smart planning. Then he asked the question I hear on almost every Toyota job from this era: is aftermarket going to be as good as what the dealer sells?

Honest answer, and I gave it to him straight on the curb: the fob housing, the blade, and the electronics all need to be properly sourced. I have seen cheap blanks with shells that crack within weeks and chips that sync during programming but drop out later. Those are the ones that make mobile locksmiths look bad. The blanks I carry have been tested across a lot of Toyota jobs from this generation. I test every batch before it rides in my van. Anything that fails quality checks gets sent back.

His existing fob was the factory four-button unit. I cut a new blade to match his lock on my machine, confirmed the transponder chip in the blank was the right type for his immobilizer, and ran the programming sequence. Tested the blade in the door lock, tested ignition start, walked all four remote buttons. Everything worked.

He asked what the dealer would have charged. I told him to call and find out, but that my price was a fraction of that. He pocketed the spare and said it was coming on every road trip from now on.

Toyota 4runner Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

My key blade snapped off inside the ignition. Can you get it out?▼

Yes, broken key extraction is a standard mobile job. I use extraction tools designed to grip or hook the broken piece without chewing up the ignition cylinder walls. On a 2002 4Runner the ignition cylinder is accessible without pulling the steering column apart, so this usually goes smoothly. Once the piece is out, I can cut a new key either by reading the remaining fragment or by decoding your door lock directly.
