2013 Toyota 4runner Remote Head Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional
Out in Ramona Highlands, a woman called me about her 2013 4Runner. She had bought it used a few years back with one key and kept meaning to get a spare made. She never did. Then the key housing cracked, and at some point during a rough morning she locked the door with the blade still in the lock cylinder. It snapped. Half the blade was stuck inside the lock, the fob housing was in her hand, and the car was not going anywhere.
When I pulled up, she had already tried the obvious thing: wiggling what was left of the key. She stopped when she realized she was making it worse.
I extracted the blade fragment from the lock first, worked carefully so the cylinder stayed intact. Then I decoded the lock to get the cut, and I checked the fob housing she still had. The circuit board and the transponder chip inside were fine. The plastic had taken the damage; the electronics had not.
Because the original chip was still readable, I did not have to run a full all-keys-lost procedure. I programmed two new remote head keys using the existing transponder data, cut both blades to match the vehicle, and rebuilt one unit into a fresh shell using her original board. She went from no working keys to two in about 40 minutes, standing in her own driveway.
She asked what the dealer would have charged assuming she could have gotten the car there at all. I told her they would not have started the conversation cheaply, and they would not have come to her. She already knew that.
