2021 Toyota 4runner Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

In Nestor, right near the edge of Otay Mesa, a guy called me from a beach parking lot. He'd been out on the water, came back, and his only fob was gone. Checked his bag twice, retraced his steps, asked at the lifeguard station. Nothing. The 4Runner was just sitting there locked with no way in and no spare anywhere.

All-keys-lost on a 2021 4Runner is one of the more involved Toyota field jobs, but it's a known process with the right tools. I got into the vehicle mechanically, then decoded the lock cylinder to get the exact cut depths for the blade. No guessing, no grinding. Once I had that, I cut a new key blade to match and started the fob programming side.

On these newer 4Runners, adding a smart key when there are zero registered fobs in the system requires a full immobilizer reset through the OBD port before any new key can be enrolled. The system needs to see the reset, then the new fob registration, in sequence. I ran that process with my diagnostic equipment, enrolled the new fob, and tested every function before I called it done: door handle touch unlock on both sides, the start button, the lock and unlock buttons, and the mechanical blade in the door cylinder.

He was watching the whole thing from about ten feet away, arms crossed, the way people stand when they're not sure whether to believe it's going to work. When the engine turned over in the same lot he'd been stranded in, he just nodded slowly, like he was processing it.

The dealer option would have meant a tow, a multi-day wait for a key to be ordered, and a bill that would have hurt. He got back on the road in under an hour, right there in Otay Mesa, for way less than that.
