Toyota Solara Key Tech Through the Years

First Generation (XV20)

1999-2003

The 1st gen Solara runs a TX00-4C (ID33) transponder chip inside a standard blade remote head key with three buttons. The chip talks to Toyota's immobilizer every ignition turn, and without that handshake, the engine refuses to start. We program these on-board through the OBD port, so no towing and no waiting.

First Gen, New Chip

2004 (XV20 Transition)

The 2004 XV20 Solara looks the same on the outside, but Toyota swapped in a Toyota 4D-67 (Texas 4D) transponder chip under the hood. Same three-button remote head key, same FCC ID GQ43VT14T, but the chip change means you need the right blank or the immobilizer will reject it. We verify chip type before cutting anything.

Second Generation (XV30)

2004-2008

The 2nd gen Solara moved to the XV30 platform and runs a Toyota 4D-67 (Texas 4D-67) chip with a new FCC ID: GQ43VT20T. Still a three-button remote head key with a standard blade, and the remote fob takes a CR2032. Programming is still on-board, which keeps things fast and affordable.

Late Second Gen (XV30)

2007-2008

Late model 2007 or 2008 Solara still runs the Toyota 4D-67 (Texas 4D-67) chip, but some of these need EEPROM access if the standard on-board method does not take. We always try on-board first because it is faster and cheaper. If your car needs the deeper approach, we have the tools on the truck to handle it.

Which Solara Key Do You Have?

🔑
Remote Head Key (TX00-4C)
1999-2003

Metal key with a chunky plastic head that has lock, unlock, panic buttons built in. The transponder chip inside is what lets your engine start.

🔑
Remote Head Key (Texas 4D)
2004 (XV20)

Looks identical to the earlier key, but the internal chip changed to a Toyota 4D-67 (Texas 4D). Wrong blank means the key turns but the car refuses to start.

🔑
Remote Head Key (Texas 4D-67)
2004-2008 (XV30)

Updated remote head key for the 2nd gen. Three buttons, standard blade, CR2032 battery inside the fob. The 4D-67 chip talks to a slightly updated immobilizer.

🔑
Remote Head Key (Late 4D-67)
2007-2008 (XV30)

Same key style as the rest of the 2nd gen, but some late cars may require a different programming approach. We test on-board first and go from there.

Solara Key Problems We See in San Diego

🔍

Transponder Key Failure

The 2004-2008 Solara remote key (same as same-era Camry) cracks along the rubber button seam after about ten years of pocket wear. The internal chip and transmitter work. We swap the OEM Toyota shell and pair the chip, around $135. Common from Encinitas and Carlsbad.

⏱️

Remote Programming Lockout

The on-board programming requires precise steps within 5-second, 40-second, and 3-second windows, and missing any kicks you out of programming mode entirely. We handle this with the right tools so timing is not an issue.

🔑

Ignition Lock Cylinder Wear

Key feels sticky, grinds, or refuses to turn. On 2004-2008 Solaras the ignition cylinder wears, and the integration relay in the anti-theft system can compound it with warning lights or a no-start. We diagnose cylinder, relay, or both before recommending a fix.

Can You Self-Program a Solara Key?

1999-2003 (XV20)
Yes - DIY Possible

You can program the remote buttons yourself via a door cylinder sequence, but only with an existing working remote to start the process. The transponder chip still needs professional programming with an OBD tool, so the remote will lock/unlock your doors but you will need us to make the engine start.

2004 (XV20 Transition)
No - Pro Required

No confirmed DIY method exists for the 2004 transition year. Both the transponder and the remote need professional programming equipment. Call (619) 876-1271 and we handle it on-site.

2004-2008 (XV30)
No - Pro Required

The 2nd gen Solara does not support reliable self-programming for remotes or transponders. Some unverified sequences float around online, but they are inconsistent and can lock you out of programming mode. We bring the right tools and land it first try.

Worth Knowing

Here is something specific to the Solara: the 1999-2003 Solara shared its full immobilizer system and Toyota 4C chip with the same-era XV20 Camry, and the 2004-2008 Solara shared with the XV30 Camry. The Solara was always a Camry coupe under the skin, which means every key code lookup runs through the same Camry table. We see Solara calls weekly from Carlsbad and Encinitas, often paired with a Camry in the same household.
