There is a parking lot near CSUSM in San Marcos where I have done more than a few jobs. This one stands out.
A guy called me from the AutoZone off Craven Road. He had a 2004 Toyota Solara, one key, and that key had been through it. The plastic head was cracked down the middle and held together with electrical tape. He wanted a spare made before the original gave out completely.
He told me he had already gone to a hardware store kiosk and paid for a copy. The copy turned the door lock fine. The car would not start with it. Cranked, fired for half a second, died. He figured the kiosk had cut it wrong, so he went back and they recut it. Same result. He did not know the original key had a chip in the head that the kiosk machine never touched.
I pulled up to the lot, decoded the key, cut a new blade, and transferred the chip programming using my equipment right there. The new key started the car clean on the first try. He held both keys up and said they looked identical. I pointed to the chip inside the head of the new one.
He asked what the dealer would have done. I told him they would have ordered the key, had him come back another day, and charged him a good chunk more. He was back in class before the hour was up.
