It was a Saturday morning out near Santee Lakes Area. The parking lot was filling up fast, kids and parents moving in every direction, and a woman was standing next to her 2002 Solara with that particular look people get when they've already tried the obvious thing twice and it didn't work.

Her remote had stopped locking the doors. The car still started fine. She'd swapped the CR2032 herself, watched a video about it, done everything right. Fresh battery, correct size, correct orientation. Still nothing on lock and unlock. Trunk button also dead. Car started, she drove it there, but the remote was basically a key blade at that point.

I pulled out the fob and opened it up. The battery was brand new, seated correctly. What I found was a hairline crack along one of the internal contacts inside the housing, the kind that develops when the shell gets flexed one too many times from being dropped or packed in a bag with other keys. The chip read fine. The blade was fine. Just the housing had given up.

I transferred the chip to a new shell, verified continuity at the contact points, and tested every button from across the parking lot before handing it back. Lock, unlock, trunk, and the panic button, then three clean starts to confirm the transponder side was still talking to the immobilizer correctly. It was.

She didn't need a full replacement. She needed someone who didn't just assume a dead battery was the whole story.
