Yes, broken key extraction is a standard part of what I do on mobile calls. I carry the tools to pull the broken piece from the cylinder without damaging the ignition housing. Once it's out, I can either decode the cut from the extracted piece or pull the cut data from the lock directly and cut a new key on site.

On the 2002 Solara, the key housing shell is a known weak point. The plastic body has a single retention peg that takes the full stress of insertion and removal every day, and after a few years it becomes brittle. Some owners go through two or three shells before the blade itself finally snaps. If you've noticed the shell cracking or the head feeling loose on the blade, that's the warning to deal with it before it breaks off inside the ignition rather than in your hand.

If the remote buttons die but the car still starts, the transponder is intact and you're only dealing with the remote receiver side. If the chip stops communicating, the car will crank but immediately stall even with a perfect blade cut. Each failure has its own path, and figuring out which one you're dealing with is the first thing I do when I arrive.

My Solara shows a key warning on the dash and won't start. Where do I begin?

First thing: check the CR2032 battery in the fob. A weak cell is the most common reason for remote failure and can also affect the transponder signal enough to cause a no-start on these.

If a fresh battery doesn't change anything and the car cranks but immediately stalls, that points to the transponder side not communicating with the immobilizer. That's a diagnosis and programming job, not a battery swap. If it won't crank at all, rule out the basics first: neutral safety switch, brake pedal, ignition cylinder wear.

One thing I'd skip: don't keep cranking it repeatedly if the immobilizer is triggering. Some of these older Toyota systems have a lockout behavior after repeated failed attempts that adds a delay before the next try. Give it a few minutes, try once more with a known-good key if you have one, and call if it's still not starting.

I bought a replacement fob online. Can I program it myself or do I need a tech?

You need a tech with the right equipment. The 2002 Solara does not have a user-accessible self-programming sequence for the transponder side of the key. The immobilizer registration requires a diagnostic tool connected to the OBD port to read the security data and register the new chip. No ignition-turn trick, no button sequence covers it.

The remote buttons are a separate matter. Some Toyota remotes from this era have a standalone remote-only programming mode that doesn't touch the transponder at all, but that only handles the lock and unlock functions, not the start authorization. If your car already starts fine with your current key and you only need to add or replace the remote side, that part may be simpler. Does the immobilizer lose my key data if the car battery dies completely?

No. The immobilizer on the 2002 Solara stores key registrations in non-volatile memory. A dead 12V battery, a jump start, or even disconnecting the battery for an extended period does not wipe the programmed keys. If the car won't start after a battery issue, the most likely cause is residual voltage instability, not lost key data. Let the battery charge fully and try again. If it's still a no-start after that, the diagnosis goes in a different direction, but erased key memory is rarely the answer on these.
