How Toyota Yaris Keys Have Shifted
XP90: Transponder Key Era
Turn-key ignition like any other, but a hidden Toyota 4D-67 transponder chip inside the plastic head talks to your car immobilizer every start. No chip match, no start. Good news: this generation supports on-board programming, which means we can add keys via a door and ignition sequence without plugging into anything.
XP130: Remote Head Key
Toyota combined the remote buttons and the transponder chip into one unit for this generation. The key still runs a Toyota 4D-67 (DST40) and a standard blade, but programming now requires OBD-II access, meaning we plug our diagnostic tools into the port under your dash. Still straightforward for us, and we handle it right at your San Diego address.
Transition Years: Verify by VIN
These years overlap between the XP90 and XP130 platforms. Some 2012 and 2013 cars still run the older transponder key, while others got the updated remote head key with OBD-II programming. We verify by VIN before rolling out so we bring the right blank and the right approach.
Mazda2-based: Smart Key and Push-Button Start
Things changed significantly. Toyota moved the Yaris to a Mazda2-based platform with a proximity smart key (FCC ID WAZSKE13D02), push-button start, and a high-security blade. This generation requires dealer-level server access for programming. We tell you that upfront and point you in the right direction rather than waste your time.
Which Yaris Key Do You Have?
Traditional metal key with a chunky plastic head. The transponder chip is hidden inside the grip. Insert and turn to start, just like the old days.
Lock, unlock, panic buttons built right into the key head. One piece does it all: unlocks the doors remotely and starts the car when you turn it in the ignition.
Pocket-friendly fob. Walk up, grab the handle, press the button, drive. The emergency blade tucked inside is a high-security cut, different from the older Yaris keys.
Looks identical to the standard 2012-2018 remote head key. The catch is some early cars in this range may run the older platform. We verify by VIN before coming out.
San Diego Yaris Pricing
Every price covers the blank, cutting, programming, and bench test. Lockout service runs $105-$145.

Yaris Key Problems We See in San Diego
Transponder Programming Failure
The Yaris (2007-2018) has key head plastic cracking along the chip cavity after about eight years, exposing the transponder to moisture. Once cracked, the chip fails. We replace with OEM Toyota Yaris key shell and re-pair the chip, around $125. Common from Chula Vista and National City.
Key Blade Cracking
The real problem is the plastic housing cracking at the transponder area, incredibly common on 2007-2013 Yaris keys. Buttons stop working or the blade feels loose. We transplant original chip into a fresh-cut shell so you do not need a full reprogramming.
Smart Key Battery Drain
On 2019-2020 smart key cars, first we check whether the fob is actually being recognized. Sometimes the battery drains fast because the key and car are not talking properly. A quick diagnostic tells us if it is a CR2032 swap or a programming issue.
FCC Mismatch on Replacement Remotes
Toyota used multiple FCC IDs across Yaris years, and remotes that look identical can be incompatible. Always match the FCC ID and part number to your specific year. Unsure? Call (619) 876-1271 and we look it up.
Can You Self-Program a Yaris Key?
You can program the remote lock/unlock functions yourself via a door and ignition sequence. No tools needed. However, the transponder chip that actually lets the car start cannot be self-programmed on the Yaris. For that, you need professional equipment.
No DIY here. Both the remote functions and the transponder require OBD-II diagnostic equipment to program. We handle this on-site with our Autel IM608 or VVDI Key Tool Plus.
The smart key system on these years requires dealer-level server access for programming. We cannot do this one on-site, and we tell you that before rolling out so you are not paying for a wasted trip.

Worth Knowing
Here is something specific to the late Yaris: the 2019-2020 US Yaris (the final year of the model in America) was actually a rebadged Mazda2 sold under the Toyota nameplate, sharing the Mazda chassis, Mazda key system, and Mazda transponder. There is no Toyota XP code for these years because they are technically Mazda underneath. We program them off the Mazda tool, not the Toyota tool. Hardly any San Diego locksmith catches that detail, which is why we get the call out of National City.
