2014 Toyota Yaris
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

Q: What exactly is a remote head key and what's inside it?

It's a single unit where the key blade folds or sits directly out of the fob body, instead of being a separate fob on a keyring. Your 2014 Yaris uses one with four buttons and a CR2016 battery powering the remote side. Inside the head of the key there's a transponder chip. That chip has no battery -- it gets its power inductively from a coil ring around the ignition cylinder when you insert and turn the key.

Q: How does a mobile locksmith compare to the Toyota dealer for this job?

The dealer has the car for at least a day, sometimes more if they're waiting on key hardware to be ordered. You're also paying dealer labor rates on top of parts markup, and if your car isn't drivable you're adding a tow to that bill. Owners on Toyota forums regularly post dealer quotes that make them wince, and the 2014 Yaris is no exception.

Q: My 2014 Yaris starts fine but the remote lock and unlock stopped working. Do I need a new key?

Not necessarily. If the car starts, the transponder chip is still being read correctly -- that's the part that matters for the immobilizer. Remote function failures on these keys usually point to the CR2016 battery first. These cells lose voltage gradually, and the remote side stops working well before the transponder side notices anything. Swap the CR2016 and make sure the replacement is seated flat with solid contact on both terminals.

Q: I bought a replacement fob online for my 2014 Yaris. Can I program it myself?

No. The 2014 Yaris remote head key requires diagnostic equipment to register a new transponder to the immobilizer. There is no ignition-turn sequence or button trick that works for this setup. The remote functions alone might have a self-programming procedure for some configurations, but the transponder chip -- the part that actually lets the car start -- needs a tool on the OBD port. If you already bought a key online, that's fine.

2014 Toyota Yaris Remote Head Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I got a call from a guy parked near the beach access in Fire Mountain, Oceanside. He'd had his only key since buying the Yaris used, and somewhere between the sand and the parking area it was gone. He checked his bag, retraced his steps, talked to the lifeguard. Nothing. The car was just sitting there in the lot.

All-keys-lost on a 2014 Yaris is a job I've done enough times that I know what to bring before I leave the van. I started by reading the lock cylinder to decode the blade cuts. Once I had those depths, I cut a replacement blade to match the vehicle. That handles the mechanical side.

The electronic side is where most people think it gets complicated. With all keys gone, the immobilizer needs to be reset through the OBD port before any new key can be registered. That process has a timed sequence built in, so you can't rush it. I ran the reset, registered the new remote head key, and verified both the transponder and the remote functions were responding correctly.

He watched the whole thing from a few feet away, which I don't mind. When his Yaris started in the same lot he'd been stranded in, he just nodded like he was trying to decide if it had been real.

The dealer would have needed a tow, an appointment, and a multi-day wait. We were done in about 50 minutes, for a fraction of what they quoted him when he called in a panic right before he called me.

Toyota Yaris Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

Why does Toyota key replacement cost so much?▼

It's not just a metal key. The remote head key on your 2014 Yaris has a transponder chip that the immobilizer verifies on every single start attempt. It also has the remote locking functions built into the same unit, so you're programming two systems at once: the immobilizer and the RF remote receiver. That takes proper diagnostic equipment and the right key hardware, not just a blank off a rack.
