Out in the Mission San Luis Rey Area of Oceanside, I got a call from a guy who had snapped his only Yaris key off in the door lock. Not broken in the ignition, the door. Half the blade was still inside the cylinder.
He had already tried the tape-and-tweezers method. Made it worse.
I extracted the broken blade from the cylinder without pulling the lock apart, then decoded the cut from the lock face while I was right there. Had a new key cut on my van in about ten minutes. He tested it in the door, then the ignition. Turned right over.
He mentioned he had been about to call a tow truck to drag it to the dealer, figuring they were the only ones who could handle it. That surprised him a little, that the whole thing got handled in his driveway before he even finished his coffee.
The dealer would have had it for at least a day. He was done before 9am.
