2019 Toyota Yaris
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

Q: How much harder is it to replace a Yaris smart key when all keys are lost?

Significantly harder, and the cost reflects it. When you have one working fob, adding a spare is a relatively clean programming job. When every key is gone, the immobilizer has to be fully reset through the diagnostic port before any new fob can be enrolled. That process has a timed sequence built into it, so the job takes longer even when nothing goes wrong.

Q: Are aftermarket smart keys worth it for the 2019 Yaris, or should I stick with OEM?

It depends on what you mean by aftermarket. A quality OEM-spec replacement fob from a reputable supplier will program fine with the right equipment. A cheap fob pulled from an online auction is a gamble. On newer Toyota smart key systems, the fob has to pass the vehicle's verification before it enrolls, so a poorly cloned or incorrectly sourced unit can fail the pairing process entirely and you're out what you paid for it.

Q: My 2019 Yaris start button sometimes takes two or three presses. Is that the fob or something in the car?

This is one of the more common complaints on this generation. Start by ruling out the fob battery. A CR2025 that reads just low enough to cause intermittent issues is worse than a dead one, because a dead battery is obvious and a weak one keeps you guessing. Swap the battery first with the correct CR2025 size.

Q: Can I use my 2019 Yaris fob to start the car if the battery inside the fob is completely dead?

Yes. There's a mechanical key blade stored inside the fob. You can use it to get into the car manually. Once inside, hold the fob itself directly against the start button and press. The vehicle has a backup detection path that reads the fob at close range even with no battery power. It won't work from across the seat, but pressed against the button it should authenticate.

2019 Toyota Yaris Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I got a call from a guy parked off Seacoast Drive in the Bayside area of Imperial Beach. He'd locked his fob inside the 2019 Yaris. Door was shut, fob was on the seat, and he was standing on the sidewalk in the afternoon heat.

He'd already called one place that told him the door would have to be forced and the lock might not be the same afterward. He didn't love that answer, so he called me.

I got there with my long reach kit and opened the door without touching the paint or the weather stripping. No marks on the door frame. The car looked exactly as he left it, except now it was open.

Once he had the fob in hand, we tested all four buttons and the passive entry on both door handles. Everything read fine. The fob had just been sitting in a warm car for a couple hours, so I had him hold it and walk through a full function check before I packed up.

He asked about a spare key while I was there. Smart call. Getting a second smart key made on the spot is always cheaper than being back in the same position without a working one at all. We took care of that before I left.

The other place's plan would have cost him more and left him with a door that needed work. He paid a fraction of that for a clean open and a spare key, all done at the curb in Bayside.

Toyota Yaris Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

What is the cheapest way to replace a smart key for my 2019 Toyota Yaris?▼

Call a mobile locksmith first. Dealers on this generation Yaris will quote you for the fob, the blade cut, programming time, and diagnostics separately, and those line items add up fast. With EZ Car Keyz, you get a single quote that covers everything, and I come to you in Imperial Beach instead of you arranging a tow. No appointment days out, no sitting in a waiting room.
