Out in Ocean View Hills, off one of those apartment complexes tucked behind the main stretch in Otay Mesa, a woman called me about her 2013 Yaris. Her only key. She had been meaning to get a spare cut since she bought the car used two years back, and the moment she stopped thinking about it, the key decided to remind her.
The blade had snapped in the door lock. Half of it still seated in the cylinder, the cracked fob housing in her hand, the transponder chip loose inside the shell. The car was locked. She had nowhere to be for a few hours, which was the one thing going right.
I extracted the blade fragment from the cylinder first, then decoded the lock to establish the cut. While I had the housing open, I checked the circuit board and the chip. Both intact. The chip was readable, which meant I could work from the existing transponder data rather than treating it as all-keys-lost and doing a full immobilizer reset from scratch. That saves real time on these.
I rebuilt her setup into a fresh shell, cut two new keys to the decoded bitting, and verified both remotes cycled the locks correctly before I packed up.
She went from a snapped blade in the lock and a cracked housing to two working keys in under 45 minutes. She mentioned the dealer had quoted her a wait of several days just to get an appointment, on top of whatever they were going to charge. That comparison was her idea, not mine. I just showed up to Ocean View Hills and did the work.
