2014 Toyota 4runner
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

2014 Toyota 4runner Remote Head Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I got a call from a guy at the Poway Business Park. He worked in one of the warehouse units off Danielson Street and had set his only key on the workbench, somewhere, and then spent an hour turning the place inside out before admitting it was gone.

His 4Runner was sitting in the lot with nothing. No spare at home, no valet key tucked in the glovebox. Just a locked truck and a guy with a meeting in two hours.

All-keys-lost on this generation 4Runner is a job I do regularly. I started by decoding the door lock cylinder mechanically to get the exact cut depths, then used that information to cut a new key blade on site. Once the mechanical side was done, I connected through the OBD port and ran the immobilizer reset sequence. That process has a timed phase built in, so you cannot rush it. Old key memory gets wiped, new remote head key gets registered, and the transponder gets enrolled to the vehicle.

The moment the engine turned over, he just leaned against the truck and exhaled. Said he thought his whole afternoon was gone. It wasn't. Total time from the first tool out to engine running was about 50 minutes.

He mentioned the dealer on the way out. I told him what the dealer would have charged and how long the wait usually runs. He did the math quietly and nodded. That part was almost an afterthought by then.
