2024 Toyota 4runner
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

2024 Toyota 4runner Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I was parked up in East Lemon Grove finishing notes on a previous job when the call came in. A woman, visiting family in the area, had her only 4Runner fob go unresponsive.

The car would not acknowledge the key at all. No welcome lights when she walked up, no response from the door handles, nothing. She tried the backup method of holding the fob directly to the start button, which the 4Runner supports when the battery is low or the antenna is weak. Still nothing. She called the dealer. They told her to tow it in, earliest appointment was the following afternoon.

I pulled up about forty minutes later. The fob was a four-button unit matching the factory setup for this year, the one with the factory FCC ID printed on the back label. First thing I did was open it on my tailgate. The CR2032 inside was so drained it tested flat. She had no idea how old it was. Fresh battery, seated correctly, and I held the fob to the start button again as a test.

Still nothing.

At that point the fob itself was not the issue. The car had lost the pairing, likely triggered by the dead battery event combined with how long it had been sitting unresponsive. I connected my diagnostic equipment to the OBD port, pulled into the vehicle security system, and re-registered the fob. The 4Runner requires professional tooling for this, no ignition-turn sequence exists for smart key enrollment on this generation.

It took about thirty minutes. When the dash lit up normally and the door handles came alive, she did a slow walk around the car touching each handle like she was checking her work. Trunk button, lock, unlock, start. All of it.

She mentioned the dealer quote on her way out. I just nodded. She already knew.
