2022 Toyota 4runner
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

2022 Toyota 4runner Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

Out in the Mission San Luis Rey Area of Oceanside, I got a call around 2am from a guy whose 2022 4Runner was sitting in his driveway and going nowhere.

He had one fob. That was the whole problem. It had been acting up for a couple weeks, he said, doing that thing where you walk up and the door doesn't unlock until you pull the handle twice. He figured it would sort itself out. It didn't. That night it stopped talking to the car entirely. Push-button start just sat there. No crank, no response, key-not-detected on the dash. He was already pricing tow trucks and looking up dealer service hours for the morning.

I told him to wait. I drove out.

The 4Runner AKL procedure on this generation is a real job. It's not a button sequence or an ignition dance. The immobilizer needs to be accessed through the OBD port, the existing key data gets cleared, and the new fob gets registered from scratch. I ran through it in the driveway while he watched, new fob paired, emergency insert cut to the vehicle, everything verified working before I packed up.

He was back inside before 3am. No tow, no waiting three days for a dealer appointment, no rental car. The dealer comparison came up at the end, almost as an aside. He'd gotten a quote once for a spare and decided against it. He mentioned it quietly, like he knew what it meant that he'd skipped it.

Get the spare made while you still have a working key. Every 4Runner owner I've told that to after an AKL job nods like it's obvious. It never feels obvious until it's 2am.
