2016 Toyota Mirai
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

2016 Toyota Mirai Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

She was at a sushi spot in Rancho San Diego when her bag got taken off the chair right next to her. Keys, wallet, phone, all of it. She borrowed the server's phone and made three calls in order: police, husband, me.

Her 2016 Toyota Mirai was sitting in the parking lot with zero working keys. When her husband called the dealer, they quoted a multi-day turnaround, said the car would need to be towed in, and recommended a full rekey. The estimate was well over what she expected to spend.

I got there that evening. The first thing I told her husband was the part that usually calms people down: the moment I wipe the key memory, the stolen fob is dead to the car. It can still physically enter the door lock, but the immobilizer will not allow the engine to run. That matters when a stranger has your keys and knows what car they go to.

All-keys-lost is a different job than adding a spare. When the car still has a trusted key in memory, adding another is relatively quick. When every key is gone, I have to clear the immobilizer, start the key registry from zero, and register fresh fobs from scratch. On the Mirai I connected through the diagnostic port, cleared the old key data, and registered two new fobs. Then I decoded the door lock and cut the emergency insert blade for each one so she had a physical backup if the fob battery ever died.

Both fobs tested clean across every function before I closed the hood. She drove home that night. The dealer's timeline was days away, with a tow at her expense. The stolen key was already erased before she pulled out of the lot.
