2007 Toyota Fj Cruiser
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

2007 Toyota Fj Cruiser Transponder Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

Out near Ramona Country Estates, a guy had been driving his 2007 FJ Cruiser on a spare key for about three months after his main key stopped reliably starting the truck. Sometimes it would fire right up.

Other times he would sit there cycling the ignition waiting for it to catch. He figured it was a fuel issue or maybe a sensor, so he had already been down that road with a shop before someone finally asked him when the starting problem started and whether it seemed to follow one particular key.

It followed the key.

He found me through Google and I came out to him. The spare was working fine, which told me the truck itself was not the problem. The other key had a damaged head, the kind of thing that happens when a key lives on a crowded ring and gets torqued sideways in the cylinder over time. The transponder chip inside was still there but the physical damage had shifted things enough that the read was inconsistent.

I cut a replacement key blade to his vehicle and transferred the programming. Tested it cold, tested it again after a short sit. Clean start every time.

He mentioned he had almost let a shop pull the fuel pump on a hunch. That would have been an expensive non-answer. Dealer route was also on the table, which would have meant a tow since he was not confident in the key and did not want to risk getting stranded. He saved a good chunk coming this direction, and more importantly he saved it the same afternoon without moving the truck.
