2013 Toyota Fj Cruiser
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

2013 Toyota Fj Cruiser Transponder Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

Downtown Ramona, mid-morning. A woman called me about her 2013 FJ Cruiser parked outside her apartment.

Her only key had given out the hard way: the plastic housing cracked at the neck, and when she tried to use the door lock cylinder, the blade snapped off. Half the blade was still seated in the cylinder. The key head, with the chip still inside, was sitting in her hand in two pieces.

Before I touched anything else, I confirmed the transponder chip in the broken housing was still intact. It was. That matters because when the chip survives, I can work from it directly instead of treating the job as all-keys-lost. I extracted the blade fragment from the cylinder carefully, then decoded the lock to get the cut specifications.

From there I cut two new key blanks to match, transferred the original chip into a fresh shell for one key, and programmed the second key to the immobilizer on site. She went from zero working keys to two in roughly 40 minutes, parked right in front of her building.

She asked about the dealer almost as an afterthought. I told her what a full all-keys-lost job through a Toyota dealer typically looks like in terms of wait time and cost, and she just shook her head. Having the broken key with the chip still alive made the whole job faster. That is always the first thing I ask when someone calls about a broken key: is the chip housing still in one piece.
