A homeowner in Cardiff-by-the-Sea called me on a Tuesday morning. His 2004 Tundra was parked inside a gated community, wouldn't start, and the tow company couldn't get past the front gate without a resident escort. He had no working key and no way to move the truck.
I followed a resident through the gate and walked over to where the Tundra was sitting in guest parking.
The remote was actually fine. The issue was the transponder side of the ignition key. The chip had failed, which is a known wear point on keys this age. The truck would crank, almost catch, and then the immobilizer would kill it. Classic pattern once you've seen it enough times.
I cut a replacement key to the vehicle and programmed the transponder on site. On the 2004 Tundra, adding a key while a working key is still present can be done through an onboard procedure using the existing key, no dealer scan tool needed. Because his original key had failed, I worked through the all-keys-lost process with my programmer. New key, new chip enrollment, remote resynced to the receiver. Tested it twice: unlock from the remote, then start. Both worked.
The truck never left that parking spot. He didn't need a tow, didn't need an appointment, and didn't need to wait days for the dealer to order parts. I walked in, did the job, and walked out. He saved a good chunk compared to what the dealer would have quoted, assuming the dealer could have even gotten to it that week.
