2007 Toyota Tundra
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

2007 Toyota Tundra Transponder Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

The call came in from the Seacoast area of Imperial Beach on a weekday afternoon. A guy had just gotten back from a week-long trip and walked out to his 2007 Tundra in a parking lot to find it sitting exactly where he left it, keys in hand, but completely unresponsive when he tried to start it.

The key would turn, the truck would crank, and then it would die immediately. He tried three or four times. Same thing every time. He thought it was a fuel problem, maybe something that sat for a week. He was already looking up tow numbers.

I asked him one question: does it start and stall, or does it not crank at all. Starts and stalls. That told me what I needed to know before I even got there.

When I arrived, I confirmed the ignition cylinder was fine and the key was turning cleanly. The issue was the transponder chip in his key head. The key had been cut at some point by someone who used the right blade profile but the chip either was not programmed correctly or had lost sync with the immobilizer. The truck was seeing the key mechanically but rejecting it on the security side.

I programmed a replacement key on site, tested it through three cold start cycles, and handed it back to him. He watched the whole thing from the bed of his own truck.

He mentioned the dealer had quoted him a wait of a couple of days just to get an appointment. He was back on the road the same afternoon, in his own driveway, for a fraction of what the dealer route would have cost him.
