2017 Toyota Tundra Remote Head Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional
It was 5:30 in the morning when the call came in. A guy was standing in a supply store lot in Old Town National City, crew already loading up, shift starting at 6. His Tundra's remote head key had gone completely unresponsive overnight. The ignition wouldn't turn. He couldn't be late.
I was pulling into that lot twenty-five minutes after he called.
The key itself was the issue. The remote head key on the 2017 Tundra is one unit, remote and transponder together, and when the battery drops far enough, the transponder signal can weaken right along with the remote functions. The truck wasn't reading the key at all. I got him in through the door, connected my equipment through the OBD port, and cleared out the fault the dead key had left behind. Fresh CR2016, key reprogrammed, truck running.
Hands-on time was about twenty minutes. He made his shift.
On the drive home I thought about what the dealer alternative would have looked like. A tow, a service appointment, probably a day or more waiting on parts and a tech slot, and a bill a lot heavier than what he paid me. Instead he had a running truck in the same lot where he'd called me, and I left him with a spare CR2016 in the glovebox so the next battery drop doesn't catch him off guard.
