2006 Toyota Tundra
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

2006 Toyota Tundra Remote Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

A guy in Downtown Fallbrook flagged me down near the Home Depot lot on a lunch break. He had a 2006 Tundra and one working key left. Not lost - just one key, and he wanted a spare before that last one walked off or wore out. He'd called the dealer first. They told him to bring it in, wait for an appointment, and plan on being there a while.

He found me instead.

What I explained to him on the spot is something a lot of Tundra owners don't realize: this truck uses a remote with a transponder chip in the key head. The remote programs to the truck's receiver. The chip programs to the immobilizer. You have to do both, and you have to have the right equipment for both. He had been thinking of it as just a "fob" - like it was all one thing.

I cut a new key blade to match his lock, programmed the transponder chip to his truck's immobilizer through the OBD port, and synced the remote functions. Did it all right there in the parking lot. He tested every button, turned the key, let the truck run for a minute.

The dealer comparison came up at the end, almost as an afterthought. He said the dealer quote was more than he expected and the soonest appointment was the following week. He got it done that afternoon for a fraction of that, standing next to his truck.

The truck didn't need a dealer bay. It needed the right tools and someone who knew what this specific key setup actually involves.
