I got the call from a parking lot near Grossmont Center, just a few minutes from Downtown La Mesa. It was around eight in the evening. A woman had a tired kid fresh out of the hospital, arms full, and a 2014 Tundra that was not responding to anything.
She had tried the fob repeatedly. Nothing. The truck just sat there.
When I pulled up, the first thing I did was get the door open with a slim jim so she could at least get the child settled inside. Then I looked at the fob. The battery contact inside had corroded enough that even a fresh CR2016 was not making solid contact. The remote side of the key was dead, and because the contact was compromised, the backup transponder read was unreliable too.
I replaced the fob housing and the battery, cleaned the contacts, programmed the new key to the truck through the OBD port, and ran through every function before I packed up. Lock, unlock, panic, tailgate button, and then a full ignition cycle to confirm the transponder was talking to the immobilizer. Everything checked out.
From her first call to the engine running was about 45 minutes. The dealer was already closed and would have been a morning appointment minimum. She got her kid home. That is the whole job.
